2010 NFL Draft Winners and Losers: Who Truly Won and Lost?

How many of us rush home to watch the NFL draft this year? How many of stayed glued to the TV only to see our favorite college football players get drafted? We all wanted to know which teams would get them. We wanted to know many things about the process. Among cheers and glasses of wine and pitchers of beer, we celebrated when they were drafted. Among all this celebration, there were clear winners and losers. It is one thing to be drafted, but it is totally a different thing for the players who hoped to be drafted by a certain team in a specific round. Of course, everybody wanted to be drafted in the first round as the first pick. In the following article, you will read the comments of CNBC writers. Please read their writing at cnbc.com. You can find more comments there too! Here is the list of winners and losers according to these journalists, bloggers and commentators:

WINNERS

1. Tim Tebow: Who knows what happens to Tim Tebow now that he's in Denver, with Kyle Orton and Brady Quinn also on the roster. But college football's most valuable player was able to save face by being taken as the 25th pick in the first round.

Those pundits who enjoyed talking about how far Tebow would fall sure will be eating crow today. At No. 25, Tebow should make about $8 to $10 million guaranteed with a five-year contract. (He arguably made more for the University of Florida over four years.)

Out of all the contracts I want to see, it's this one. How creative can agent Jimmy Sexton get with incentives? Because if Tebow turns out to be the team's quarterback, he should obviously get paid a lot more than if he's running all over the field.

Something important to note here is that I suspect Tebow—as well as Colt McCoy of Texas (who wasn't taken in the first round)—will make more money in marketing in their local college markets of Gainesville and Austin than they will in their NFL markets for at least the first three years of their career.

2. CAA wins the agent game: There were 19 different agents representing the 32 picks chosen. Tom Condon and Ben Dogra of CAA had all six of their clients (Sam Bradford, Gerald McCoy, Derrick Morgan, Jermaine Gresham, Bryan Bulaga and Jerry Hughes) go in the first round last night. Estimating that their players will earn about $118 million guaranteed, if CAA takes a 3 percent cut, last night was worth at least $3.54 million to them.

Other impressive showings by agents included BEST's Joel Segal (Brandon Graham, Maurkice Pouncey and Kyle Wilson) and Eugene Parker and Roosevelt Barnes of Maximum Sports (Ndamukong Suh, Trent Williams & Dez Bryant).

3. Big 12 Makes Mark: The Big 12 led all conferences in first round selections with 10. Turns out 31 percent of yesterday's names called came from the Big 12, including the first four picks. Following the Big 12 was the SEC (6), ACC (4), with the WAC, Big Ten and Big East having 3. The Pac-10 only had two names called while the Mountain West had one. When was the last draft that didn't have a single name called from USC, Ohio State or Notre Dame in the first round?

4. The State of Oklahoma: Six players drafted last night played their college ball in the state of Oklahoma. The University of Oklahoma had three players in the top four (Bradford, McCoy and Williams). Combined the three figure to make $110 million guaranteed. Oklahoma also had Gresham go 21, while Oklahoma State saw Russell Okung and Dez Bryant land in the first round.

"All of us are so excited for them and proud of the way they handled themselves in reaching their dream," Oklahoma athletic director Joe Castiglione told me last night. "They will demonstrate the same ethic, passion for success and character which have been amongst their trademarks to the next phase of their journey in becoming a great teammate within the organizations they now represent."

5. Tyson Alualu: Alualu, a defensive tackle from California, went No. 10 to the Jacksonville Jaguars, despite the fact that you'd be hard pressed to find one mock draft with Alualu in the first round. Alualu can expect a nice payday of about $15 million guaranteed, whereas, if he went where he was projected, he probably would have wound up with a $4 million payday.

LOSERS

1. Jimmy Clausen: The Notre Dame quarterback was expected to be a mid-first rounder, but didn't get taken at all. But Clausen might not join former Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn as being among the biggest money losers in the history of the draft. I estimated that Quinn lost $17 million in 2007 by slipping from his projected No. 3 slot to No. 22. The tough part with estimating Clausen's losses is that the pros projected him to be all over the place.

ESPN's Mel Kiper had Clausen as high as No. 8 in his final mock draft, SI's Peter King had Clausen going 14 to Seattle, while most, including ESPN's Todd McShay and NFL Network's Mike Mayock had him going 30th to the Vikings. The difference between being selected No. 8 and going in the early second round is probably about a $14 million loss, but if Clausen gets picked really early today, he should still make more than last year's No. 30 pick Kenny Britt, who got $6.5 million guaranteed.

2. The Networks: Love the primetime idea, but the draft was incredibly boring to watch, both in person and on TV. Why? Because it lacked the college football star power, the players drafted from the skill positions—the quarterbacks, wide receivers and running backs. Teams have finally learned that those positions in the draft are overvalued, but it does kill the TV product.

Only seven players selected last night came from those offensive skill positions (Tebow, Bradford, C.J. Spiller, Ryan Mathews, Demaryious Thomas, Bryant and Jahvid Best), which might be the lowest number from those position spots ever in the first round. Last year's draft had 12 players from those positions and the 2005 NFL Draft had the first five players called playing the quarterback, running back and wide receiver positions.

3. Bryan Bulaga: Iowa's offensive tackle slipped recently on mock draft boards, but not many had him much lower than No. 17. Bulaga slipped six spots further than that to the Green Bay Packers. If he went where Peter King said he'd go at No. 5, he would have made about $30 million guaranteed. At No. 23, he's looking at a contract that will guarantee him closer to $8 million.

4. Jacksonville Jaguars: Who knows? Alualu might turn out to be a stud, but if you believe that the draft is hit and miss, why not take shot at drafting homegrown son Tim Tebow? Jacksonville was one of only three teams last year in the league (along with Oakland and Detroit) that drew less than 80 percent capacity. Maybe the Jaguars will see their mistake when the stadium fills to the brim for a chance to see Tebow in some fashion when the Broncos visit the Jaguars in the first game of the season.

5. Dez Bryant: Bryant getting taken 24th is the cautionary tale that says that football talent is only part of this game. Bryant might have been a stud at Oklahoma State, but he had too many strikes against him when he was suspended last season after he lied to the NCAA about his contact with Deion Sanders.

Skipping the NFL combine probably wasn't the best move either. Bryant probably lost about $10 million if lived up to his full potential in college and didn't have any strange things going on. The good thing is that Bryant just might be so talented that he can make that up someday if he blows it up in Big D, which of course is the perfect place for him to play.

This morning, Tiger Woods has said he is sorry, not just for crashing his car early in the morning the Friday after Thanksgiving, but for all of the "intimate details of [their] personal lives." Since he's asking for "the right to some simple, human measure of privacy", the 33-year-old golfer with the wholesome image did not reveal details of several rumored affairs.

"I have let my family down and I regret those transgressions with all of my heart. I have not been true to my values and the behavior my family deserves. I am not without faults and I am far short of perfect. I am dealing with my behavior and personal failings behind closed doors with my family. Those feelings should be shared by us alone."

While he's sidestepping the real story, women who allege that they've been involved with Woods are divulging all kinds of details.

Jaimee Grubbs, a cocktail waitress who says she's had an on-and-off again affair with Woods for three years, shared sexual text messages he sent to her. The woman who formerly appeared on the VH1 show "Tool Academy" is now also revealing a message she says is from Woods asking her to take her name off of her voicemail because his wife was going through his phone.

Rachel Uchitel, another woman said to be involved with Woods, has denied the affair. Other sources connect Uchitel not only to Woods but to Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter. Uchitel says that feeling overwhelmed by the press led her to secure legal representation by attorney Gloria Allred.

While the audience is waiting for more information to surface from Woods and the women he may have been involved with, I'd like to turn my attention Elin Nordegren, Tiger's wife and mother of their 2-year-old daughter Sam and 9-month-old son Charlie.

Immediately following the accident, Woods praised his wife's actions, saying, "The only person responsible for the accident is me. My wife, Elin, acted courageously when she saw I was hurt and in trouble. She was the first person to help me. Any other assertion is absolutely false."

Many call it a “miracle on the Hudson River.” Others see it as the performance of a lifetime. No matter what, one thing is clear. Thanks to his training and expertise, Pilot Sully managed to land a huge aircraft damaged by bird strikes. It was not an easy task. Bravo to the stewards who managed to keep the passengers calm enough and get them out of the submerging airplane.

Who is Sully?

A former Air Force fighter pilot, “Sully” was lauded by New York City mayor Mike Bloomberg, who hailed Sullenberger’s actions as “masterful.” Even President George Bush called him to congratulate him.

What others are saying about this great act of heroism. The pilot made sure that he was the last person to leave the airplane.

ABCNews put it this way, “The hero of Flight 1549, pilot Chesley B. Sullenberger III, walked the aisle of the downed US Airways jet twice looking for passengers before exiting the plane he safely ditched in the Hudson River, saving the lives of more than 150 people onboard.”

And the Wall Street Journal wrote the following, “For the first time in 50 years of commercial jet flight, the pilots of US Airways Flight 1549 successfully executed one of the most technically challenging maneuvers, landing a jetliner on water without fatalities.”

Has Michelle been receiving preferential treatment all this time? Well, the complaint comes because she receives exemptions, 53 of them or invitations. This time, she finished among the top 20 players at the Q-school to become a card-carrying member of the LPGA Tour.

The 19-year old from Hawaii feels like she belongs with others. "It's a good feeling." Wie said. "I really earned it. I legitimately went through Q-school. I took my medicine. And I got it. It feels good. It's like high school graduation."

Will she play against the men? Well, for now, Wie plans on returning to Stanford for the Winter quarter. She plans on playing a full LPGA schedule next year.

Jeev Milkha Singh did not start the Nippon Series Cup in Tokyon on good emotional footing. He had just lost his first stillborn child. But in the end, encouraged by his wife, Kudrat Singh, recovering in a Tokyo hospital, he played and won. "I will dedicate this win to my wife," said Singh. "She is healthy now. Better things are on the way."

Singh won by two strokes, closing with a 4-under 66 at Tokyo Yomiuri for a 12-under 268 total. In the Singapore Open, he beat Ernie Els and Padraig Harrington by a stroke. He also won the European tour's Bank Austria Open and the Japanese tour's Sega Sammy Cup.

Mr. Singh is a winner after all. The baby will come later.

Already elated over Usain Bolt's world-record run in the men's 100 on Saturday, Jamaicans got something else to celebrate when Shelly-Ann Fraser, Sherone Simpson and Kerron Stewart swept the women's 100 on Sunday.

Olivia Grange, Jamaica's minister of information, culture, youth and sports, had said after Bolt's stunning 9.69 that she was "on top of the world." Where did Fraser's 10.78 and the photo-finish 10.98 each run by Simpson and Stewart leave her?

"I am on top and all over it," Grange said. "It's just wonderful. Amazing.

"It's national pride and it's an inspiration to all Jamaica, particularly to our young people. It gives us something we can say to our young people to strive for."

IOC president Jacques Rogge criticized Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt on Thursday for showing a lack of respect to other competitors after his record-breaking gold-medal performances in the 100 and 200 meters.

"That's not the way we perceive being a champion," Rogge said.

The International Olympic Committee chief hailed Bolt's stunning achievements in the two sprints, comparing him to American great Jesse Owens, but he said Bolt should have cut out the look-at-me flaunting and acknowledged the other athletes.

"I have no problem with him doing a show," Rogge said in an interview with three international news agency reporters. "I think he should show more respect for his competitors and shake hands, give a tap on the shoulder to the other ones immediately after the finish and not make gestures like the one he made in the 100 meters."

Question for this guy: Is there a new treatment for an athlete who is celebrating his victory? Why treat Michael Phelps differently? Did he say the same about his screaming around the pool in the bird nest? This IOC chief needs to check his motives.

Wellesley Bolt said his son was partial to the vegetable grown in the north-western area of Jamaica where the sprinter was born.

“It is definitely the Trelawny yam,” Bolt senior said seconds after his son smashed the world record on the way to landing the biggest gold medal in sport.

The yam grown in the parish Trelawny is one of the staples that has made the area famous. It is sold in huge volumes here and much of it is exported.

Not even Superman is more visible online. For every person searching for Superman, five searched for Bolt up to Friday. It is not easy to beat Superman which is one of the most searched items on the internet. Sunday Finance compared the two, utilising Google Trends which analyses how many searches have been done for the terms over time. Google then shows the results graphically. In terms of news results there were 7,776 for Superman versus 39,216 for Bolt. The news section highlights most current webpages, which is important because simply typing in Superman or Bolt in the main search area will garner both old and new webpages-which of course would favour Superman many times over.

Bolt has been tested so many times. It was pure natural talent and training.

Carolina Panthers receiver Steve Smith was sent home from training camp Friday after he punched teammate Ken Lucas at practice, leaving the starting cornerback holding an ice pack to his left eye before he was carted to the locker room.

Panthers coach John Fox said Smith and Lucas returned to Charlotte, about 80 miles away, after the fight. Neither player was present for the team’s second practice Friday night.

The Panthers didn’t provide an update on the extent of Lucas’ injuries and club officials declined to say if the volatile Smith, the team’s top receiver, would be suspended.

"It was the effects of a 5.4 earthquake that hit Los Angeles at 11:42 a.m. PDT. (1:42 p.m. CDT) The Cowboys' training camp facility in Oxnard is 60 miles north of Los Angeles. No damage has been reported so far at the River Ridge Facility.
But the earthquake was definitely felt."

The Pacman was fine. He did not get into trouble.
